Literary Analysis
setting characters and plot
The setting of the story takes place in Airstrip One otherwise known as London. This place is a dystopian society, or a society that has actually traveled backwards in technology and quality of life. It is a socialist dictatorship were the government owns everyone and everything. There are security cameras everywhere and if you so much as think negatively about the party then you are subject to torture until you truly love the party. The parties goal it to have complete control over the world and its people only for its own benefits(Orwell 234,238). They are trying to completely exterminate the citizens individual thought and emotion only leaving love for their own country and hatred for all of the other countries(Orwell 238). They do this by altering the past entirely to make the party look great and make everyone else look evil and to make it look like life quality is actually improving.
There are a couple main characters who are in this book. The main one being a man who is a middle class citizen that is a member of the outer party. This outer party makes up for only 13% of the population along with the upper class inner party that makes up 2% of the population and the lower class proles accounting for 85% of the population(Orwell 185). His job is to make the people belive what the party wants them to belive by altering, creating and destroying records depending on what information they contain(Orwell 33). Also there is his girlfriend Julia who is on the maintenance staff in the same building Winston works in.
The overall plot is about a middle-aged man named Winston who begins to wonder about what life was like before the party and if the party actually was helping improve life. He eventually finds out about how much better life sounded before the party took over and that many things that the party says are lies. This causes him to wish for the party to fall. Eventually he is found and arrested for this "thoughtcrime" and is subjected to various forms of torture until he eventually truly loves the party and willingly believes everything they say.

IMportant themes and symbols
There are a few prominent themes in this book. One of wich is the tyrany involved in socialism. The book shows this in a few way such as describing the amount of poverty it can bring about for the lower classes. An example of this would be poor quality of food, or low quality housing for the civilians. Also it shows this theme by the government not caring for the individual people in their country. They only think of another person as another mouth to feed and do not actualy care about the individuals life. The only reason to have eyes on everyone at all times is to make sure that they are only doing, seeing, and thinking what the government wants them to.
